THE CONTAINER LANDSCAPE
A container is an icon of modernity; each rectangular box is both origin and destination, each encloses histories and stories, a name and a citation, reference numbers and safety notes, the identity of the shipping company and several layers of meaning formed over many a long journey. They are the emblem of world trade, an inspiration for contemporary architecture and art – emergency structures and shelters, modular towers shaping the skylines, objects of desire in a communicating world. These CorTen steel boxes bear the marks of handling and travel; they are encrusted with sea salt and road dust. They are symbols that leave their mark on the busy wharves, messengers bearing knowledge and experiences.Through their handling, port and city observe one another anew.
