The Kaše breakwater
The Kaše breakwater protects the town port from southern and eastern winds. Local architect Paskoje Miličević designed the breakwater which was constructed with large stone blocks bound by pozzolana-lime concrete which was poured into wooden caissons. This construction not only served for defense against the waves in the harbor which lacked natural protection, but also as the location from which large chains were stretched towards St. John’s Tower (on the south side) and towards the bridge of the Ploče Gate (on the north side), in order to close off the harbour from all unwanted ships. The Kaše breakwater and St. John’s Tower were part of Dubrovnik’s port defense fortification system.
